Report North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC)

2024 Long-Term Reliability Assessment

The latest assessment from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation warns that electricity demand growth is accelerating and that resource adequacy risks are increasing across much of North America. NERC specifically identifies demand growth from data centers, electrification, and industrial expansion as major drivers and notes that transmission and generation additions must keep pace to maintain reliability.

2024 & 2025 Intergrated Resource Plans

Dominion’s planning documents project the largest growth in electricity demand seen in Virginia since the post-World War II era. The utility forecasts that load will more than double over the coming decades, driven primarily by data centers, economic development, and electrification. The IRP is fundamentally a roadmap for the generation and transmission infrastructure needed to meet that demand reliably.

Report Edison Electric Institute (EEI)

2024 Report of the U.S. Investor-Owned Electric Utility Industry

EEI reports that investor-owned electric utilities nationwide are expected to invest more than $1.1 trillion in grid infrastructure between 2025 and 2029 specifically to meet rising electricity demand. EEI identifies data centers, AI, manufacturing growth, and electrification as key drivers behind the need for expanded transmission and generation infrastructure.
